Thomas VandevenneThomas Vandevenne

Thomas Vandevenne was born in 1963.

After studying classical percussion with Jean Batigne and Emmanuel Séjourné at the Strasbourg Conservatory and jazz studies (improvisation, harmony, writing, drums…), he turned to improvised music, particularly jazz drums, which he studied with Georges Paczynski.

After multiple experiences in this field, notably his septet “Madame Thomas” which he created and directed from 1992 to 2000 and for which he composed and recorded an entire repertoire, he became interested in traditional and ancient music which he approached with the freedom of a jazzman and in which he flourishes today between medieval or renaissance ensembles and small groups around singing which he likes to color with his rich palette of sounds.

His passion for modal music and these new repertoires have led him to work on digital percussion, particularly the zarb with Djamchid and Kevan Chemirani, but also on frame drums and the hang.

In parallel to his musical life, Thomas Vandevenne obtained the State Diploma of percussion in 1989 and that of jazz in 1990 and began to teach in the 80s.
Since 1999 he has been teaching at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg alongside Emmanuel Séjourné, Denis Riedinger, Stephan Fougeroux and Latif Chaarani.

He is the author of ” Clavier bien à temps pour se repérer “, a method in 2 volumes to begin learning percussion keyboards, as well as pedagogical scores and commissions for the Atelier de Création du Grand Est de Radio France and other works for various orchestras.

He has just published “Les claviers de percussion de deux à quatre” (François Dhalmann Editions), in which he makes the most of his double training by simultaneously giving the basics to start learning the four mallets and the work of harmonic improvisation.
