“Timpanistique” is a pedagogical piece, written for four timpani and piano.
It is built around a theme exposed to the timpani which gives rise to a
modulating development. The language is deliberately inspired by the great orchestral pages
as this is where the primary function of the timpani is expressed.
This piece can be played by students of higher
Conservatory cycle, during auditions, concerts or exams. It requires the student to listen
carefully to the piano at all times in order to play correctly during tonal modulations
as well as in the rhythmic setting. The timpanist will be able to change mallets during
the rests in order to vary the expression registers
according to what the text inspires him.
