Latif ChaaraniLatif Chaarani

Latif Chaarani, born in Casablanca, regularly practiced traditional percussion in his native country, Morocco, until 1978, when he moved to France.

In Nancy, where he finished his studies in economics at the university, he devoted himself to music by playing Afro-Cuban percussion, but also oriental. He was one of the founders of Mister Bird, an avant-garde jazz group that won a prize at the Festival de la Défense in Paris in 1987. In 1989, he obtained the State Diploma in traditional percussion and in 1992, the Certificate of Aptitude for the functions of traditional music teacher. He teaches Latin and Oriental percussion instruments, first at the National School of Music of Épinal, and since 1995 at the National Conservatory of Region of Strasbourg. Since then, he has played for several years in the Orchestre Régional de Jazz en Alsace. It is precisely in this context that he had the opportunity, with the other musicians of this orchestra, to accompany the saxophonist Archie Shepp at the Vienna Jazz Festival in 1996.

Since 1998, he has been composing for the theater and is co-writer and co-composer (with Jaime Cordoba) of the musical story Un jour, à Cuba…, intended for schoolchildren and published in 1998 by Éditions Van De Velde. From 2001 to 2010, he also performed with Mariano Martin, a flamenco guitarist, in a duet in search of the common roots of two related cultures, Spanish and Oriental. As an actor and musician, he played in the film Swing by filmmaker Tony Gatlif, shot in 2001 and released in 2002, as well as in the musical show by the same filmmaker, entitled Vertiges, staged in 2007. In 2002, he accompanied, as a percussionist, the concert tour of Jane Birkin, for her show Arabesques.
