Description
Chassé-croisé IV – Nicolas Vérin
Duo for flute and percussion.
Commissioned by Radio France for the program Alla Breve.
Chassé croisé IV (2004) is part of a cycle of duets, which includes Chassé croisé I for clarinet (+ cl. B.) and viola, Chassé croisé II for clarinet and cello, andChassé croisé III for two violins.
These pieces have in common that they are dedicated to the performers who created them.
The flute part uses several multiphonic sounds as well as tongue-rams.
The percussion includes a vibraphone (whose low F is prepared, and which is in a passage played with 2 bows) and 6 gongs.
The two instruments are the protagonists of a chase, a game of hide and seek, with its conflicts and resolutions. They are each a character, with a frozen scale, features and characteristics. The two musical characters are sometimes strangers to each other and sometimes engaged in a dialogue.
The rhythmic aspect is emphasized in a spirit of play, of jubilation sometimes.
The piece is divided into 10 short movements, articulated in pairs: introduction and process 1, statism 1 and percussion solo, quasi una caccia and statism 2, flute solo and process 2, con giubilo and coda.
