Geburstag IV, V, VI – Bruno Giner
Three pieces for six hands piano -Intermediate
Score available in hard copy or for download.
Each piece in these collections for six-hand piano corresponds to an anniversary (Geburstag in German). Some of these dates mark public anniversaries, serving as brief tributes to certain composers or artists (Luigi Russolo, John Cage, Erik Satie, Ruzzante). Others commemorate historical events (the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, the ringing of Notre-Dame de Paris’s bells following the November 13 attacks), while still others correspond to private anniversaries.
Geburstag IV : 17 mars 1542 (Angelo Beolco alias “Ruzzante” : musical) theatre
March 17, 1542, marks the birthday of Angelo Beolco, known as Ruzzante, the “founding father” of the Commedia dell’arte. A form of street theater, the comedy relied primarily on all sorts of physical antics. Each character wore a mask and a distinctive costume.
Three characters to bring to the stage.
Tartaglia (Pianist 1): Tartaglia is boastful, a bit dim-witted, hot-tempered, and above all… a stutterer. He stutters so badly that he can never finish a sentence. He is very jealous of Pulcinella and is always trying to take his place, without ever really succeeding.
Pulcinella (Pianist 2): Pulcinella is talkative, rude, and a bit of a bully! He’s the one who waddles like a duck and chirps like a chick (hence his name). A phony and a chatterbox, all he cares about is sunshine, a good glass of wine, and a big plate of macaroni and tomato sauce!!
Pedrolino (Pianist 3): Pedrolino is bright, friendly, and empathetic. As the ancestor of Pierrot and his moon, he hates conflict and always tries to bring people together whenever he can.
Geburstag V : 14 avril 1931 (Spanish republic)
April 14, 1931, marks the anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic. This piece is based on a “remix” of the Republican anthem combined with excerpts from folk songs collected by the poet Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated by the Falange on August 19, 1936. The lyrics of these songs, which were modified, served as Republican rallying cries during the Spanish Civil War. April 1, 1939, marked General Franco’s victory, and he established a fascist dictatorship that lasted until 1975.
Geburstag VI : 28 mai 1966 (private anniversary)
