Mermaids – Daniel Goyone

This theme is built from metric permutations. Sequences of 24 eighth notes are divided into different bar sequences. Ex: 5/8 + 5/8 + 5/8 + 3/8 + 3/8 + 3/8.

This way of proceeding is inspired by a mathematical approach to rhythm found in Indian music. As an exercise, each part can be practiced with the metronome beating dotted quarter notes, or half notes. This version, adapted for percussion, is a shortened version of the original theme (full score in: ” Le Livre du jazz en France” / Ed. Outre-Mesure).
