This story is not only ornithological, it goes through a Prevert inventory based on the repetition of the first syllable, a list of words beginning with CUI… then CU… to end with the famous onomatopoeia that imitates the song of the bird: Cui cui.

The subject is light while being exaggeratedly dramatized by the indications of play (didascalies).

Le jeu de timbale dans un premier temps, soutient la voix pendant l’inventaire, puis prend la parole avec un motif oriental, basé sur des temps alternant 2 ou 3.
Après le retour de l’inventaire, un développement de la thématique orientale débouche sur un choral final reprenant à la toute fin le thème principal.

The mention of César Cui is totally linked to the thematic but also to the musical subject since he was a composer born in Russia in 1835 and died in 1913.

There is no indication of how to play the timpani at the beginning, but the performer is totally free to “color” the written ostinato by changing the stick, playing with the handle, rubbing the head, or any other idea related to the text or not.
