Ocells means “birds” in Catalan. This short trio, intended for intermediate students, is conceived and designed as a duet. The same instrument is systematically doubled: two flutes (one entity) dialogue with two bass drums (another entity). This permanent duality is expressed on musical, technical, and symbolic levels: high/low; striated time/smooth time; hiccup/counterpoint; foot/hand; hand/stick; sky/earth; aerial/deep, and so on.
