The central idea of the composition is to take part in a meditative and ritual moment, characterized by the slow gestures of the opening and closing sections, common to all three works. Specific symbols
indicate the exact points of the skin to be struck. Thanks to the acoustical properties of the instrument, different timbres can be perceived depending on the striking point, thus achieving a kind of “synthesis” between performative gesture and sound color. References to Eastern cultures are evident (such as the practice of Japanese taiko). The title “Meditation” refers not only to a psychic state, but also to a dilated temporal space dedicated to thought. For this particular piece, there are no preparations or additional instruments (except for
the use of the super ball): the compositional aim is to expand the timbral and technical possibilities of the instrument through a few simple gestures.
